About Japanese scissor sanding
Matz Lützow, founder of Lützow of Sweden is trained in the Japanese scissor shear grinder technology that has been used for over a hundred years. It is unique as many do not get the opportunity to educate themselves within the Japanese scissor tradition that has developed for generations.
The technology comes from the scissor factory that is considered the best in the world – and has the leading Japanese scissorsmiths in the industry. It takes between 25-30 minutes to carry out a repair and a Japanese grinding. There are many steps to be done with high precision and in the right order before the scissors are properly ground. The art is to sharpen the scissors correctly so that it keeps the sharpness for a long time.
Many scissors are today wrongly ground and therefore lose sharpness already after 2-3 months. Scissors who are not trained in Japanese technology miss many basic moments.
We never grind inside the salon
We always perform all Japanese and ordinary grindings in our mobile grinding truck that we park near the saloon. It is impossible to make a good scissor grinding inside the salon if you want a good result. Today we also have many customers from all over Sweden who send in their scissors for grinding to us. It takes a lot of a scissor grinder to produce a sustainable result that lasts for several years.
Scissor quality
Not all scissors hold the sharpness for as long, it is good to know when you decide to sharpen their scissors. It often pays to cost on a more expensive quality scissors that you can grind up to 14 times, and a cheap scissors can only be sharpened 2-5 times. The cheap scissors have a harder time maintaining sharpness and this is partly because they have a cheaper steel quality. Good quality scissors that are top class you have to pay between 4 000-15 000 SEK for depending on the supplier. Today, about 50% of all scissors in the world are manufactured in China and some of the old Japanese brands are today manufactured there as well. Many are machine-made and therefore do not maintain the same quality as 8-10 years ago. It is now harder to find the really good scissors that are made according to old Japanese tradition.
Maintenance of scissors
When you buy a new pair of scissors, you get oil that is used to lubricate the scissors. Many hairdressers often forget about the oil or do not receive information from the seller how important it is to oil the scissors. It takes
just 3 seconds to oil the scissors with a drop above and under the screw. The scissors should be oiled several times a week. The function of the oil is to transport away hair and dirt that comes into between the two leaves. The oil also makes the scissors softer and smoother to cut with.
There will also be a canvas (Chamoise) with when you buy your scissors. The cloth is made of leather and is designed to polish the edge at regular intervals. You can compare the canvas with a sharpener to a knife, it is to direct the edge when it becomes uneven. Polish the edge back and forth 30 times on both blades and align the edge so it will be straight again. Be careful not to cut yourself or the Chamoiser cloth.
Important! The cloth may only be used for scissors. First wipe off dirt with paper before polishing. Sometimes you may need liquid with alcohol e.g. Isopropyl alcohol to remove dirt that comes from hair products containing various silicones, etc., which can be difficult to wipe away. A little liquid on a piece of paper and wipe this can be done several times a week while you should polish with the Chamoise cloth.
Do you have the scissors set correctly?
Check periodically to make sure your scissors are correctly tightened. Open the scissors at 90 degrees with the thumb blade vertically and the fingerrest blade horizontally. Drop the blade with the finger rest.
Set correctly
10 second scissor quality test
See if your scissors are well made in 10 seconds. The hardest part to get to when making a hairdresser’s scissors is the concave inside of the blade. Here you can easily see if your scissors or the scissors you intend to buy are of good quality.
Open the scissors so you can see the entire inside of the blade. You need good lighting for the test so find a lamp that gives you a bright light. Hold the scissors under the light and angle the scissors vertically towards the light slowly, you will now see the light from the lamp but also a shadow line that appears on the blade when you angle the scissors. The shadow line should go straight parallel from the scissor edge up to the back of the scissors, the line goes straight and finely from edge to back so the quality is very good. If the line swings, for example. a slalom track, it is a low priced scissors or budget scissors. Turn the scissors over and retest the second blade. This test you can not do on scissors with matte surface these scissors you do not have to do the test on for them belong to the segment low price and budget price.
