A master hairdresser’s quest for a dream

As the world’s leader in scissor design, Hikari is attentive to making the finest collection of cutting instruments. This devotion comes from the dream of the Hikari founder, Fukataro Takahashi. Mr. Takahashi, born and raised in Japan, was a nationally acclaimed, hairdresser for masters. He knew the demands of the craft and realized the need for a truly superior cutting tool. Unfortunately, there were no tools available that met Fukataro’s expectations of high quality and excellent craftsmanship. But Mr. Takahashi was reluctant to accept that there was no “perfect” tool out there. His dream was to give every hairdresser the ultimate tool for haircuts. Through his perseverance, passion and dedication, Hikari was born sax.

Research

Fukataro studied the properties of metals, microscopic hair pieces and analyzed hair structure. Armed with his extensive knowledge and experience in scissor design and hair cutting techniques, Fukataro designed and manufactured the first pair of Hikari scissors in 1968. He brought his prototype to many scissor manufacturers, but was rejected every time. They gave him the same answer: the product is good, but producing the scissors would take too much time and money.

Passion for Excellence

With fierce passion and perseverance, Fukataro opened his one-man business. Over time, he trained others in the fine art of scissors, and the company grew. Hikari’s careful research in metallurgy resulted in alloys with properties such as strength and elasticity, which gave many years of joy when they “melt” through the hair, time and time again. Fukataro’s unpleasant ability to renew scissor designs that are timeless in the application quickly gained worldwide recognition as the new industry standard. Hikari is the only sax manufacturer founded by and directed by a hairdresser. It is our founder’s first knowledge of the art of rocking that really sets Hikari apart from the rest.

Hikari Urges Precision Convex Edge

All Hikaris are handmade in Japan, with precision convex blades and vacuum heat treated alloys. Precision Convex Edge, invented by Hikari, revolutionized the concept of cutting sharpness and accuracy. Vacuum heat treatment ensures durability and long cutting life. The Hikari Precision Convex Edge combines a hand-buffered outer blade with a hollow (concave) inner blade. Both blades are polished by hand for razor sharpness. This edge has no stripes or conventional outer edge phase or grinding, making Hikari scissors the most accurate in the world.

The tradition continues

In Japan, the tradition continues for the grandchildren of Fukataro Takahashi, Shinichi Takahashi (also a hairdresser for masters). As a young boy, he was educated by his father (Kazuyoshi Takahashi) and his grandfather (Fukataro Takahashi) in the art of cutting scissors. Shinichi, with his staff of expert craftsmen, produces by hand all the Hikari scissors in the world. His passion for the beauty industry and the demand for perfection continue to drive him to push his grandfather’s dream of creating the ultimate cutting tools.
